Ionel Haiduc, the president of the Romanian Academy declared on Wednesday that the Rosia Montana gold mine proposal is "a big mistake and does not justify the collateral negative effects." "I consider that this proposal is stupid, a big mistake, if not a crime," declared Ionel Haiduc to the Agerpress press agency.
On Wednesday the Romanian Academy, the country’s most respected independent scientific body reaffirmed its position regarding the Rosia Montana proposal highlighting that it "does not represent an effort in the public interest and thus does not justify the collateral negative effects." Mr Haiduc was referring to the significant environmental impact that would result from large scale open cast mining, the destruction of unique archaeological sites, the use of risky technologies and the absence of a long term social and economic solution.
The Romanian Academy considers that it is inappropriate to realise this mine proposal and instead wishes to see another solution for the area’s economic recovery; a solution that does not adversely affect the environment and cause harmful consequences. The country’s highest cultural and scientific body does not reject the idea of foreign investment but it considers that these need to create real and long-term benefits.
