Tony Blair’s former aide Jonathan Powell has a new job with an American based multimillionaire who backs a controversial gold mining scheme in Romania. Powell is still close to the former Prime Minister, and in February became a “Senior Adviser” to “Tony Blair Associates”, Blair’s main business vehicle. In the same month Powell became a “Senior Adviser” to “Tigris Financial Group LLC”. Tigris would not tell Private Eye what the group does, or what Powell’s role is. Company papers deliberately made the ultimate control of Tigris unclear, but Private Eye discovered it is in fact a vehicle for New York mining investor Thomas Kaplan: He has backed investments in oil, platinum and silver mining across the world.
