Greenpeace Romania Press Release
Greenpeace activists demand Roșia Montană Gold Corporation to stop working on a disaster
Bucharest, 7th July, 2010 – Greenpeace activists from Romania and Hungary have blocked the employee access entry of the Roșia Montană Gold Corporation (RMGC) and are determined to hold their ground until the mining company will stop their activity.
Today, 7th July, at 7.30 A.M, Greenpeace activists have installed the Save Rosia Montana Camp in front of the RMGC Headquarters. 15 activists have chained themselves at the entrance. Through this action, Greenpeace Romania is closing down the RMGC headquarters and demands a ban on all mining activities. The banners read: ”RMGC: stop working for a disaster!” Greenpeace activists claim that ”if the company’s employees are going to their office every day, they are doing nothing else than working on the destruction of Roșia Montană. Any minute of suspended activity of RMGC is a minute gained for Roșia Montană.”
Greenpeace Romania brings out to the public opinion that RMGC has never worked before in a mining project, the project in our country being the first of this kind. Although the main shareholder of RMGC (Gabriel Resources Ltd) is a self-proclaimed ”Canadian company”, in reality, according to official documents, it is only a branch, with the real headquarters located on the island of Jersey, of Great Britain.
Greenpeace is against all kinds of mining activity and supports sustainable development and tourism, as an alternative to mining activities. Greenpeace considers that Romania should take into real account the recommendations of the European Parliament about banning cyanide in mining activities, and should join the other countries which have already put a ban on cyanide, like Hungary, the Czech Republic etc.
At this moment the action is still taking place and anybody can join the Save Rosia Montana Camp, in front of the RMGC headquarters (17 Herăstrău street, Primăverii, Bucharest Romania).
