100 000 signatures for Rosia Montana brought by Romanian citizens to the Chamber of Deputies

24. November 2011 - Today, the 24th of November 2011, 200 Romanians gathered in front of the Palace of Parliament in Bucharest to bring 100 000 signatures against the mining project proposed at Rosia Montana and against the legislative proposal for modifying the actual Mining Law.
These signatures represent the will of 100 000 Romanians who considered their right to petitioning by reminding the Chamber of Deputies that they oppose the legislative proposal - Pl-x. 549/2009 - for modifying the actual Mining Law. This proposal is going to enter debates in Chamber of Deputies’ plenum.
The action that lasted three hours was organized as a queue in the street, in front of the Palace of Parliament. The attending signers entered one by one at the record office of the Chamber of Deputies in order to register their petitions.
The 100 000 signatures had been collected during a national campaign initiated by Alburnus Maior, the locals’ association from Rosia Montana that oppose the mining project, in August these year. Romanians were encouraged to sign the petition at the infotents placed in the most important squares and subway stations from Bucharest, through the online petition www.rosiamontana.net or by organizing themselves collecting actions in their own cities.
The legislative proposal Pl-x. 549/2009 to modify the Mining Law no 85/2003 was initiated in 2009 by two senators - Toni Grebla (Social Democrat Party) and Ion Ruset (Democrat Liberal Party) and adopted in the Romanian Senate. At the present time, the proposal is on the Comission for Industries and Services table, at every moment, being possible to enter debates in the plenum of Chamber of Deputies.
The main proposal of Pl-x. 549/2000 is to empower private mining companies with state atributes and to give the companies with an exploatation licence the right to expropriate in the name of the state. This proposal abunds in articles that brake citizens’ rights to private property, the Constitution, international treaties and conventions signed by Romania and praxis on legislative technique.
