According to the feasibility study conducted by Washington Group International in 2005-2006 and assumed by Roșia Montană Gold Corporation, the project will offer 634 jobs during exploitation; this number contains direct jobs, in the mine and factory; but also indirect jobs in administration, accounting, IT, supply, human resources, public relations, juridical, patrimony, etc. Even in the best case scenario, only a small fraction from those 1600 currently unemployed in Roșia Montană will get a job.
Moreover, the impact study conducted in other mining areas (for example in South Africa) showed that mining exploitations lead to the destruction of the local economy. Many times the mining companies instead of offering jobs to the unemployed in the area, recruit qualified personnel which usually already holds jobs with a different company. To attract the qualified segment of employs they need, the mining companies offer high salaries that cannot be matched by local contractors leading to their bankruptcy and more unemployment in the area.
