Roșia Montană is one of the oldest documented mine localities in Romania (1882 years). Its patrimony includes pre-roman and roman mines, unique in the world, and numerous monument buildings dated to different time periods. All these archeological and cultural values would qualify Roșia Montană for UNESCO World Heritage. As a matter of fact the proper documentation has been already submitted and is currently awaiting to be signed by the Ministry of Culture. On the other hand, RMGC promised the sum of 70 million dollars to the same Ministry of Culture under the condition to withhold the status of historical monuments to all the buildings, located in the Roșia Montană area, currently classified as such. Needless to say, accepting this condition would literary mean the approval of their complete destruction. During the past years, over 150 houses owned by RMGC in the area, some of them located in the historic center of Roșia Montană have been demolished! Moreover, due to the position of this invaluable patrimony in the middle of the active mining area, between 4 craters in which 10 tons of dynamite will be detonated daily, it will be impossible to protect.
The exceptional cultural and natural importance, as well as the current major threat made Roșia Montană a part of the program “7 Most Endangered’- Europa Nostra.
