17. April 2014 - Alburnus Maior in partnership with București Association organise two short holidays this spring on the Easter occasion (18-21 April) and 1st May holiday (1-4 May), as part of the tourist promotion campaign „Visit Roșia Montană!”. More than 100 people are expected to spend the holidays in this village in the Western Carpathians.
The people in Rosia will open their doors to warmly welcome the tourists visiting them for the Easter Holidays at Roșia Montană. The guests are hosted in agro-tourism guesthouses open by the local people who believe tourism is the healthy alternative to open-pit cyanide mining. The guests will enjoy a diverse programme with daily guided tours which will allow them to get a hands-on picture of the area. During their trip they will enjoy traditional meals and specific Easter traditions.
Guests will visit the Mining Museum opened in 1981 ain the Orlea Massif and the well-known Roman Galleries which made the place famous within the scientific community as early as the first half of the 19th century, and even recently, when experts from Oxford and Leicester Universities concluded that the Roman mines at Roșia Montană are the largest and most important underground gold mining complex of the Roman period known worldwide. The Crow Rock, the Sphinx at Roșia Montană and the Split Rock are only a few of the points of interest in the Natural Monument Tour, which unfortunately are threatened with destruction by the Canadian company’s plan. The evenings’ attraction are the stories by the campfire, the best opportunity to find out more, right from the source, about the local people’s fight to preserve their land, history and identity.
In addition to these attractions, available all year long, the Easter holiday programme includes local traditions specific to this important occasion. The Churches Tour includes the five churches in Roșia Montană, century-old monuments which are a proof of the faith and tenacity of people in these areas. Taking advantage of the common Orthodox and Catholic celebration of the Lord’s Resurrection this year, guests will have the opportunity to watch the Guardians custom - local people dressed in traditional attire who stand guard at the tomb of Jesus Christ in the Roman Catholic church in Roşia Montană.
Then, after the Resurrection sermon at the Orthodox Church, tourists will join the Easter Shooting, an ancient custom in which village young boys shoot from tens of cannons placed on the hills around the village until dawn to protect the community from the bad spirits prowling around it.
“Visit Roșia Montană” is an initiative of Alburnus Maior and București Association and to promote tourism in Roșia Montană as a sustainable development solution for the area.
The tourist packages for the Easter and 1st May cost 250 lei each and had a limited number of places. The places for 1st May are already sold out, while for Easter there are only a few more available.
